Exclusively at Dr. Disc: King Biscuit Boy - The Lost Sessions 1981 CD - $14.99

September 14th, 2017

=====================================================

Dr. Disc has an exclusive on the Richard Newell / King Biscuit Boy ‘The Lost Sessions 1981’ CD ($14.99). The master tapes were recently found after being misplaced placed for almost 40 years! The 10-track recording has been brought back to life, and features some of Richard’s finest performances that were previously unreleased and heard by few - until now!

About the CD:

The Lost Sessions 1981 represents a significant addition to the discography of Canadian blues legend Richard Newell aka King Biscuit Boy coming after his association with Allen Tousaint in the mid-70s, and before his series of successful albums for Stony Plain records beginning in 1984.

Knowing it would be his first recording featuring a prominent horn section, Richard took great care in selecting tracks for these sessions, The songs he chose combine some of his favourites like “Mama Loochie” and “Georgia Slop” with songs that often didn’t make it into his set lists, and chosen to feature horns like Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”, and the Ray Charles classic, “Hard Times”. “Goodnight” was typically the last song of the set on his live shows and seemed the appropriate choice to end this set.

For the producers this release represents a labour of love and the culmination of a project started so long ago.

The master tapes for this recording were misplaced for decades and thought lost forever. Needless to say, we were thrilled then they suddenly turned up during the renovation of a prominent recording studio. After reviewing them we strongly felt Richard’s incredible performance needed to be shared. He is in magnificent form: his voice at its peak and his harmonica playing is second to none. The band too, is remarkable. While young at the time, many of these musicians are now well-respected professionals who have had significant success on the Canadian music scene in the ensuing years.

The experience we all shared during the recording of these 10 songs rivals any in blues folklore. Eventful for sure. Turbulent, joyful, soulful, inspired, exhilarating, at times crazy, but always thrilling.

That’s Richard.
